It’s life Jim, but not as we know it

Yesterday, when I reposted about why criticising a previous job holder was a bad idea I jokingly added on one of my reposts ‘This repost is sponsored by Let’s Bring Some Humanity Back To Work…it’s a movement I’d get behind.’

For some reason my use of the word ‘humanity’ stuck with me all day. In my post I purposely used it in a positive sense, but it’s another slippery word because it has more than one meaning.

According to Merriam-Webster it means ‘the totality of human beings’, but it also means ‘compassionate, sympathetic, or generous behavior or disposition : the quality or state of being humane’. In an ideal world these definitions would be like a Venn diagram of two perfectly overlapping circles.

But whilst both definitions sound like they are describing the now, in reality one describes the present (the collective noun) whilst to me, sadly, the other describes an aspirational future state. So, unfortunately, as ‘Bones’ McCoy would say, ‘it’s life Jim, but not as we know it’.

Imagine what the world would be like if in our present time the Venn diagram with the two perfectly aligned circles was our reality! What difference would that make at work, at home, in our communities?!

I’ve never really thought much about this before, but thinking back, I do believe that in my own small way I’ve tried to make them both true. Today, with it at the front of my mind, I’m going to purposefully try to nudge the circles closer together by conscious action.

I can’t change the whole world but I can make a difference to the world around me. Maybe I can rephrase ‘Bones’s’ words just slightly: ‘it’s life Jim, but not as we know it, yet’
